Strong relationships require commitment and effort.
Whether you have been with God for a long time or have recently repented or are just beginning to learn about God, there are some simple steps you can take to draw closer to Him and get to know His character and the power of His love for you better.
- Recognize that you can’t live on your own
One of the first steps to establishing a closer relationship with God is admitting that you need Him. The reality is that we can’t do everything on our own. By acknowledging this, we show our humility and our faith in His power and faithfulness. As John 3:30 says, “He must grow, but I must decrease.
- Give up on destructive relationships
One of the biggest obstacles to a deeper relationship with God is destructive relationships. Whether it’s with family, friends, or co-workers, take yourself out of the equation or at least distance yourself a healthy distance to carve out time and energy for your relationship with God. It may not be easy, but the newfound freedom will allow you to focus solely on your relationship with God rather than dealing with unnecessary conflict.
- Attend a local church or homegroup
You won’t believe how important a group of people who will support you by helping you on your journey with God is. Keeping busy in your local church and/or small group is the principle of accountability, wisdom. You can’t be an alone believer. Faith involves belonging to a community with Jesus at its center. The church in Acts chapter 2 is a perfect example of this.
- Read the Bible
If you want to know the God of the Bible, then you should start reading the Bible. It is not a matter of memorizing all of Scripture in Greek, but you should read it at least once a day, nurturing your heart and soul with God’s wisdom. Daily reading and systematic study of the Bible will help build the foundation of your faith. Through Scripture, God will speak to you. It can transform you from the inside out and help you better understand yourself. If you want God to speak to you, start reading what God has already said.
“Your word is a lamp to my foot and a light to my path” (Psalm 118:105).
- Make prayer your priority
Prayer is key. It is an opportunity to talk to God. You don’t need to light candles, burn incense, or even put on a black robe. Just relax, find a quiet place, and start talking to God. Communication is the secret to a successful relationship. This rule works in families, friendships, marriages, and personal relationships with God.
